If your Aspire One doesn’t boot – just a green LED ? Before sending it back to warranty, you may want to try this:

Before you start, you will need a USB flash drive (64 MB is enough) and another computer.

Download UnetBootin
Download the newest BIOS
Run UnetBootin and make sure, that you have chosen “FreeDOS” as the distribution, “1.0″ as the version and at the very bottom, your flash disk is recognized. If so, press OK.
Extract the BIOS folder and copy the FLASHIT and FD files to your flash drive.
Rename the FD file to ZG5IA32.FD
Make sure your Aspire One is turned off, the battery is inserted and the AC power is connected.
Insert your USB flash drive.
Press and hold Fn + Esc, while holding, press the power button once.
When the green LED starts to blink, release the Fn + Esc keys and press the power button once again.
Wait for about a minute and your Aspire One will boot.

Windows Vista on Aspire One

I took my Aspire One to test how will it handle Windows Vista. Results are better than I thought. The fan isn’t as loud as on Windows XP and it also doesn’t get so hot. It boots up pretty quick and works pretty good on a 1 GB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive model. Acer doesn’t provide Vista drivers but the XP drivers worked for it. So, if you are wondering to put Vista on or not, – Yes! Do it! You won’t regret it.

Windows 7 on Atom

Lately, I’ve been reading through a lot of posts about Windows 7. Now, only the Beta version is available but I have heard good reviews from those who put it on the Acer Aspire One. I’ve also came across few posts and few web pages saying that Windows 7 is optimized for Intel Atom machines (Acer Aspire One, Asus Eee PC, etc.)

A1CTL Fan Control

I’ve spent weeks looking for a good fan control software to use on my Aspire One. I found only two and both of them didn’t work so I kept searching. One day I was in the AspireOneUser forum and I found a fan control thread and it looked pretty nice so I gave it a try. It really worked – You can turn off the fan, set it in slow mode, auto mode or custom mode. I recommend this fan control software.
